Motor Control - The Highly Complex Electronics of Motor Function

A motor control system is responsible for controlling, regulating, and monitoring a motor. Motor starters in our field are designed to start (switch on) motors, reverse (change rotation direction), and protect (with built-in motor protection switches for current monitoring). Feedback on motor temperature can also be provided through the auxiliary contact in the X-TEC 15. A motor control system does not necessarily have to be highly complex and executed in electronics.

The Functionality Behind the Technology

There are various types of motor controls, each differing in their functionality.

Motor Starters: The input three-phase current is switched on and off using contactors. In reverse operation, in addition to on/off, there is also a change in the direction of rotation of the drive. In the subcategory of hybrid motor starters, contactors are replaced by semiconductors and relays to reduce wear on the contacts. This increases the lifespan, lowers power loss, and prevents contact welding.

Star-Delta Starters: To prevent high starting currents, the drive is initially started in the star configuration and then switched to the delta configuration after a short time. This requires all external leads of the motor to be connected, which excludes connectors like the X-TEC 15.

Soft Starters: A soft starter reduces the starting current of the drive as an additional function to the motor starter. This improves the starting behavior: Hard starting of a conveyor belt can cause products to fall over. With a soft starter, for example, bottles remain stationary. Starting also includes stopping, which can be done "softly."

Frequency Converters: It generates an adjustable AC voltage from a fixed-speed AC voltage. This allows for reversing the direction and a wide range of resulting motor speeds. This variant is technically complex, as electronics are required in any case.

Defective components can be disconnected from the power supply with a quarter turn and subsequently replaced without hassle. This eliminates the need for elaborate individual wiring of replacement components. Our W-TEC power cables' quick-lock system facilitates straightforward maintenance, as well as modification and upgrading of components. The quick-release mechanism is tool-free and provides secure sealing and unlocking.

Thanks to our quick release system, the cables can be easily and effortlessly replaced. For existing wiring with cable glands, replacement with M20/M25 screw-in variants in a variety of motor terminal boxes is also easily possible.

Since our W-TEC 15 is a tamper-proof overmolded power cable, there are no spare parts available for it. If a plug or cable is damaged, it can be quickly and easily replaced via Plug and Play. For our hand-assembled X-TEC 15 plugs, spare parts are available.
